Green fluorescent protein (GFP) is a protein consisting of 238 amino acid residues that showed green fluorescence when exposed to blue light. Although many other marine organisms that have a similar green fluorescence, GFP refers to the first protein isolated from jellyfish Aequorea victoria. GFP gene can be introduced into the organism and maintained in their genome through breeding, injection with viral vectors, or cell transformation. For now, the GFP gene has been introduced and expressed in many bacteria, yeast and other fungi, fish (such as zebra fish), plants, flies, and mammalian cells.
